Second season of fishing: a path of sustainability

When we founded Hayduk, 27 years ago, we did it looking to contribute with the consolidation of a strong and responsible fishing industry. As fishermen, we worked with a long-term vision based on respect for the sea and the care of its resources, vital values for the sector and that would delineate the concept of sustainable fishing. I am very pleased to see that the results achieved during the last fishing season give us the reason.

Technology for sustainability in the second fishing season 2018

The second season of anchoveta fishing in the north-central zone has been completed, and the figures are more than encouraging: a total landfall of 2.06 million MT was registered, equivalent to 98.8% of the Total Allowable Catch Limit, set by the PRODUCE, at 2.1 million MT. This represents the beginning of the normalization of fishing operations, which were strongly affected by an inclement El Niño phenomenon in the three years prior to 2018.

Regardless of the results, from my point of view, the most important thing to highlight is the precautionary approach in the administration of anchovy and the close coordination between companies and regulatory entities to respect it as a resource. An example of this is fishing technology: ships, through electronic logs, record and send in real-time information about the characteristics of the product extracted in each of the sites. With this data, the PRODUCE monitors characteristics such as the size and quantity of the biomass, as well as verifying compliance with regulations, and may even end up suspending fishing areas to maintain a healthy reproduction.

This clearly demonstrates a projection with a view to sustainability, of the resource, and seeing that companies fully comply with these regulations demonstrates that the commitment is not unilateral, but general. It is enough to observe the results registered in the second season of 2018, which show a percentage of juveniles well below the allowed limit.

Responsible fishing industry

As I mentioned, these results express a consolidation of the sector for
sustainable fishing, which allows us to continue projecting in the long term and optimize the state of our marine resources for the following seasons.

At Hayduk Corporation - and also on a very personal basis - we are convinced that this is the way; the way to grow as fishermen and to strengthen this very exciting trade. Let's continue looking to take care of our resources, always with dedication and a lot of commitment. That is the true way of looking towards the future.
