Juveniles: Actions to reduce their incidental removal

For many years, our country has become an example for the responsible management of fisheries worldwide. Sustainability is an important pillar for our sector because it has allowed us to maintain a healthy and stable anchovy biomass for over 15 years. Additionally, this has been possible due to the different current regulations, such as the quota law, and other steps applied by the sector to protect the resource.

Although it is true that the capture of juveniles is incidental, that it happens involuntarily and there is still no technology to prevent it, some mechanisms and actions have been put into practice to reduce these incidents.

The most effective method to protect the resource is the temporary closing of the fishing areas when juveniles are detected, which is arranged by the authorities. Also, another action that ensures the well-being of the anchovy is the self-closure carried out by fishing boats. This allows its protection, since it is arranged not to pass and extract the resource on the updated areas thanks to a daily monitoring program that the Sociedad Nacional de Pesquería (National Fisheries Society) has been adopting since 2015.

Definitely, these practices have put our country below the limit of incidental hunting of juveniles established by Imarpe.

From Hayduk Corporation we are sure that sustainability can be achieved with responsibility and the Peruvian fishing industry has proven it in the last few years. Let’s keep it that way!
