First fishing season of 2019

More than ten years ago, an individual quotas system for the fishing of the main marine resource of Peru was created for the first time: the anchovy. Thanks to this decree, it was possible to control the overexploitation of the species that existed until then.

The quota allocated for the first fishing season

The quota set for the first season of 2018 in the north-central zone was 3.3 million tons (considering the natural mortality of the species, individual growth and predators consumption). However, this year the figure fell slightly due to the environmental conditions post El Niño phenomenon.

The Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE) carried out the respective exploratory fishing, with the objective of collecting information on the current biomass distribution. With these results, the Ministry of Production established the extraction quota of 2.1 million tons of anchovy.

In addition, he specified that the season will end when the quota has been reached or when the conditions vary. If there is a presence of juveniles (sizes smaller than 12cm), the activity should be paralyzed, and the area closed so that the species can change its area.

Responsible and strategic fishing

It is worth mentioning that it is the State that oversees all vessels that don´t comply with the established norms, but it is we, the fishermen themselves, who must take the initiative to respect them.

In the same way, it is important that we all commit ourselves to the safety and preservation of the environment and denounce any illegal practice that affects our sea biodiversity.

To make our work more efficient, in Hayduk we have a satellite antennas system in our vessels to facilitate communication and send information in real time. Innovation and technology are part of our management and are key to making work more efficient.
