Armada de Hierro: For Peru without anemia

The “Sociedad Nacional de Pesquería” (SNP), alongside with EsSalud, Hayduk and other associated enterprises have started the campaign “Armada de Hierro”. It is an initiative focused on fighting anemia of children between 0 and 3 years old.

The SNP and EsSalud have signed an agreement to execute the articulated actions in order to prevent and reduce this illness on different fishing grounds all around our peruvian coast, in various departments, such as Piura, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna. This first stage of “Armada de Hierro” has been mainly focused on the children of our fishing companies' collaborators.

Last September 24th, a campaign was carried out at Coishco (Ancash), where besides performing screenings for anemia, other activities took place, such as demonstrative cooking, tasting the dishes rich in iron and talks regarding the prevention of anemia and nutrition. In addition, pediatric attention was provided along with vaccinations and diabetes screening. We stand out the support of the EsSalud network in Ancash which helped to lead the campaign to its success, considering that the children under 3 years old level of anemia is alarming: In the area it goes up to 47.5% and in the region to 42.8%.

The campaign continues: Puerto Malabrigo

The next stop was made in La Libertad on September 26th. “Armada de Hierro” made it to Puerto Malabrigo to follow up with the plan that fights children’s anemia using the same method applied in Coishco. It is the fourth city where the campaign goes to, which reaffirms the commitment of the involved parties to eradicate the illness. In the same way, the role performed by the EsSalud network from Chocope in La Libertad was essential, due to the high level of anemia of children under the age of 3 in the area, which goes up to 34.8%, meanwhile in the region it gets to 50.4%.
