FAD Policy on Tuna Vessels

At Pesquera Hayduk we are in favor of responsible fishing. Therefore, we have a no-tangle FAD policy on our tuna boats.

PESQUERA HAYDUK S.A. from 2019, requires on board its vessels the use of the following best practices for FAD management, identified in ISSF Technical Report 2019-11, “Recommended Best Practices for FAD Management in Tropical Tuna Purse Seine Fisheries”.
As of 2023, PESQUERA HA YDUK S.A., in its tuna fleet (Annex 1 ), updates its F AD policy, according to latest updates of ISSF conservation measure 3.7, based on ISSF 2023-10, which updates ISSF Technical Report 2019-11, “Recommended best practices for F AD management in tropical tunapurse seine fisheries “.

In this regard, FADs used on board, follow the following requirements:

a) Comply with flag state and RFMO reporting requirements for fisheries statistics by set type

  • We commit to completely and accurately recording fishing logs, specifying ali information on FADs and related activities such as set types and share such information in a timely manner vía emails with authorities and the IATTC.
  • We commit to carry permanent observers on board on ali fishing trips through the regional observer program operated by the IATTC.
  • We also commit to collect data on the number of active FADs for monitoring as required by t-RFMO and submit it to the required IATTC/RFMO authority.

b) Voluntarily report additional FAD buoy data for use by RFMO scientific bodies

  • We commit to participate in collecting and submitting daily position data and acoustic biomass data from the FAD buoys to the relevant scientific organizations of the RFMOs and/or national scientific institutions and/or the IATTC, with a maximum lag of 90 days. Data submissions should include the vessel name and IMO number. Where possible, implementations should be identified in data submissions. And, if reported to a national scientific institution or Flag Sta te, we will request that these data be made available to the relevant RFMO for scientific purposes.

c) Support science-based limits on the total number of FADs used per vessel and/or FAD sets made

  • We commit to comply with the limit on the active number of FADs adopted by the IATTC.
  • We commit to deploy only FADs with satellite tracking buoys.
  • We also commit to support a complete closure of FADs in ali tropical tuna purse seine fisheries in the IATTC that is long enough to reduce fishing pressure on target populations.

d) Use only non-entangling FADs to reduce ghost fishing

  • We commit to only deploy or redeploy (i.e. place in the water) FADs that do not entangle at ali (i.e. without any netting) in accordance with the ISSF Guide for Non-Entangling FADs.
  • We also commit to recover, where possible, any pre-existing NEFAD found (whether a or not a set has been made) that do not comply with this measure.

e) Mitigate other environmental impacts due to FAD loss, including through the use of biodegradable FADs and FAD recovery policies

  • We commit to participa te in trials of biodegradable FAD designs and testing with the participation of RFMO and/or CPC scientific bodies or ISSF scientists.
  • We commit to participate in testing of locally sourced biodegradable materials in collaboration with scientific institution.
  • We commit to study the feasibility of deploying simpler and smaller FADs.
  • We commit to participa te in research to determine FAD deployment a reas that are at high risk of FAD deployment, providing historical monitoring data to scientific institution; and/or participate in trials of FAD recovery programs with the participation of RFMO and/or CPC scientific bodies or ISSF scientists.
  • We also commit to, when possible, remove from the water and bring back to port ali FADs (NonOwned) found with non-biodegradable items (e.g., plastic containers).

f) For silky sharks (the main bycatch issue in FAD sets) implement major mitigation efforts

  • We are committed to applying best practices to mitigate bycatch such as the safe handling and release of sharks and rays on board or brought on board.
