The conservation of marine species is fundamental to preserving the balance of oceanic ecosystems. In this context, since 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has declared July 23 as World Whale and Dolphin Day, a date that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these mammals from indiscriminate hunting and other threats.

In Peru, this commitment translates into concrete actions to protect the marine ecosystem. One of the companies actively involved in this work is Hayduk, which reaffirms its responsibility to develop sustainable fishing practices and conserve biodiversity.

On June 17, Peru was designated co-chair of the Steering Committee of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Fisheries Fund, consolidating its leadership on the multilateral stage and reinforcing its commitment to ocean sustainability. In addition, since 1979, the country has been an active member of the IWC, the international body
responsible for establishing rules and mechanisms for the conservation and sustainable management of whales and cetaceans, based on the best available scientific evidence.

“At Hayduk, we responsibly assume our role in protecting marine biodiversity. Complying with the most demanding international sustainability standards is not just a requirement, but also part of our culture. We are proud to contribute to the preservation of species such as whales and dolphins,” stated Miguel León, Quality Management Manager at Hayduk.

One of the pillars of the fishing company's commitment is the Friend of the Sea certification, which endorses sustainable fishing of Peruvian anchovy. This standard, promoted by the World Sustainability Organization, certifies through annual audits that fishing operations are carried out using responsible practices that ensure the protection
of marine ecosystems and the species that inhabit them.

Additionally, Hayduk is Dolphin Safe certified, an international seal that guarantees its fishing operations are conducted without causing harm to dolphins and in compliance with rigorous marine conservation standards. This commitment involves the application of strict protocols during fishing operations, as well as traceability that allows for verification of compliance with best practices from the sea to the final product, ensuring the effective protection of these emblematic species.

“Sustainability is not limited to regulatory compliance; it involves making responsible decisions at every stage of the production process. At Hayduk, we work to ensure our fishing practices respect the marine balance and are aligned with the most rigorous international standards,” León added.

The sustained effort between the public and private sectors has contributed to Peru being recognized as a leader in sustainable fisheries management among the world major nations and the first in South America, according to the Environmental Performance Index 2024 (EPI) prepared by Yale University.
